One person was shot dead and four students wounded in a school cafeteria by a student who then took his own life, police in the US state of Washington have said.
The shooting occurred at Marysville Pilchuck High School near Seattle.
The four students, including two cousins of the gunman, were shot in the head, with three severely wounded.
Officials said the gunman, identified by local media as Jaylen Fryberg, died at the scene.
Students could be seen with hands raised as they fled the building
The four wounded students - two female and two male - are being treated in local hospitals.
Police have not identified the deceased victim, nor said whether he or she was a student or teacher.
Federal authorities have confirmed the weapon used in the shooting was purchased legally.
The shooting occurred about 10:40 local time (17:40 GMT), and within about four minutes police confirmed the attacker was "down", said Marysville police Cmdr Robb Lamoureux. Within minutes heavily armed police from around the county swarmed to the school.
Television images showed students evacuating the school with their hands over their heads while officers from several local police agencies searched and cleared the school campus.
The students who witnessed the shooting remained in the school for hours being interviewed by investigators
